My [medical practitioner] told me that within the year she would be treating me for heart disease and diabetes if I didn't get my weight off. I knew I had gained and lost weight over and over and [told her] I was considering the band. She was skeptical and discouraged me from doing so. After much soul searching and prayer I decided I was going to do it anyway.
Now she says I have made her a believer . She tells everyone about the "patient she tried to talk out of having a lap band. She is convinced it saved my life [and is even recommending this surgery to her relatives] who are morbidly obese. I constantly tell anyone who will listen that Dr. Shina and his staff are incredible. Dr. Shina is one of the most intelligent men I have ever met. I would, and did, put my life in his hands, and I would do it all over again. God bless you all and the work you do.

Update: July 22, 2010: I am down 61 pounds since surgery (in just 2 months,

I went to three bariatric weight loss seminars before I decided on Dr. Shina. He did not "sugar coat" the surgery and was very candid about the risks and life style change. I knew immediately he was the surgeon for me. If I could give a public announcement about the outstanding patient treatment I received from his staff I would do so. I truly felt like i was VIP. Everyone catered to me to insure I was very comfortable with whatever procedure they were doing. Dr. Shina made sure I had a thorough pre-op exam. Some doctors would skip certain steps, but not Dr. Shina. I feel because of him and his wonderful staff I have the tools to begin a new and healthier lifestyle. God Bless you Dr. Shina and staff. You are a "cut" above the rest.

Dr. Shina was very informative. He left no stone unturned in the seminar portion of my consultation. He addressed all the risks very thoroughly and addressed every possible question in layman's terms. Dr. Shina is very straight forward and to the point but at the same time had a sense of humor that was shining through. His staff were friendly and helpful. There is an aftercare program in place that is mandatory if I understand it right. I can't wait to start my life changing process with his staff and himself. I am very confident that I choose the right place to be for this surgery.

very personable and easy to talk to, first impression very kind , his office staff is very patient. he is also very particular and goes to the extreme on caution measures before and after procedure. i like that very much. the one thing i dislike is not being able to see him until 6 weeks after surgery, and he is very popular and at times hard to get in to see and a long wait in the office. other than that so far beside manners and competency are both great . he actually talks to you and he is a teaching doctor. very patient.

Dr. Shina was very upfront and informative. I think he is a good doctor. I do not interact much with his office staff. Most of the ones I talk to are nice, and helpful. The thing that I dislike the most about my doctor is that I have a hard time talking to him, or asking him questions because I do not want him to fuss at me. Dr Shina is a stickler for doing things by the book, and aftercare is important to him. Dr Shinas office does have a structured aftercare program. He addressed all of the risks associated with this surgery. He even said the "D" word...Yes...death. He was very upfront and I appreciated it because some patients really do not understand the seriousness of possible side effects, some short term complications, some long term complications, and permanent complications. I do not support one sided surgeons who are only telling the benefits. Beware of those people who emphasize the good and do not inform you of the possible bad things, both are important things to know when making this choice to have the procedure or not. I would rate Dr. Shina pretty highly. I am pretty satisfied with my surgery. I think his surgical competence is better than his bedside manner, because he is so serious all the time, and I am a joking type person and I do not always know what to say during appointment time. But he has done what I expected, and thus far I am pleased with my results. I would let him do the surgery again if I had it to do over again. My opinion is that I did endure some negative things, but for every negative thing I can find two positives. Everyone has to make a choice based on their own needs, and what is best for them. I am simply expressing opinions about my personal experiences.

I met Dr. Shina the first time at a weight loss seminar put on by him. He was very straight forward and spent a lot of time explaining the surgery, the complications, especially the possibility of blood clots. He explained everything in detail and was VERY patient with questions from all of the attendees. I liked him from the very first and knew he would be a top surgeon and my surgeon! My impression has not changed and I am three months out. His office staff is first rate. They are very friendly and professional. The staff helped keep me on track for my insurance approval. I have been fortunate that I haven't needed to call for any questions but, I know they would be very happy to help in any way. Dr Shina believes very much in aftercare programs. The hospitals he uses have wonderful support programs with top notch professionals. One of the things you might not see at first is Dr Shina's sense of humor. He is a professional first but he does have a great sense of humor. Also, he will NEVER rush you. He will stay and answer all of the questions you have. If you live in the Southern Indiana or Louisville , KY area please check out Dr Shina---You won't be sorry!

A+ for first impressions. Dr. Shina is very educated and straight forward which I love. He doesn't have it in him to sugar coat the truth he just tells it like it is, which is very important to me. His staff is just as amazing as he is and very pleasant to work with through the process, they are all very polite and very helpful through the whole approval process. They definitely try their best to help their patients achieve their goals. Dr. Shina is very persistent with do's and don't for before and after surgery. He makes it very clear that having bariatric surgery requires a life change, and if your not willing to make that change and stick with it don't waste your time pretty much. He stresses the aftercare and all the risks associated with the surgery which is definitely a plus. I definitely would rate him as a 10 overall. I feel he is very experienced and knows his books so to say, I would definitely recommend him to anywhere, I don't think you could be disappointed with him.
