Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric band
(Lap Band)

Pictured below is the band device placed in the stomach during the operation.

Lap Band Surgery is performed by laparoscopically placing the "band" around the topmost portion of the stomach, as pictured below. The band is secured by connecting the stomach to itself over the top of the band. The band has an adjustment tubing which is connected to a port that is secured to the muscles of the abdominal wall underneath the skin. The band has a balloon which makes the opening that food has to pass through either smaller or larger (thus, the term adjustable) by injecting or withdrawing saline through the port. The gastric pouch above the band is about one ounce (30cc) in size and fullness or satiety is reached as this pouch is filled, making it possible to be satisfied with small food portions.

A major feature of adjustable gastric bands, the Lap Band, is that it is adjustable, allowing it to potentially become the "ideal" size for each patient. This surgery offers a lifetime advantage over the gastric bypass. However, patients considering lap band need to be fully prepared and committed to a lifestyle change in order to achieve the weight loss and health improvement that the surgery makes possible.

FILLS
Patients having Lap Band will need to visit their surgeon regularly for "fills," or adjustments, which may cost you a fee each time (ask your surgeon about his prices for fills) The adjustment or "fill" is completed by accessing the port with a needle and injecting or withdrawing saline. This can be usually be done in the doctor's office, but may from time to time require x-ray guidance.

LAP BAND IS NOT FOR EVERYONE
An increasing percentage of bariatric operations performed in the United States are Lap Bands. That percentage is expected to grow as more people undertand the safety, medical efficacy, and long-lasting benefits of the Band. However, please be aware that this procedure is not for everyone.

As with any bariatric surgery or any weight loss program you may begin, YOUR MOTIVATION IS KEY. Your surgeon will not do the operation unless he or she knows you understand the problems your excess weight is causing, and he is convinced you are ready to change your lifestyle (eating, activity, and behavioral patterns) take an active part in reducing your weight. At your initial consult, your surgeon will want to make sure you know about the advantages, disadvantages, and risks involved with having this or any bariatric surgery.

INSURANCE COVERAGE FOR LAP BAND

Your insurance company may not provide benefits for Lap Band, even though they may provide benefits for Laparoscopic or Open Gastric Bypass. Every insurance plan that provides bariatric surgery benefits provides coverage for either of the Gastric Bypass procedures, but not all cover the lap band, because of the unavailability of long-term outcome studies. We will help you "sort out" your insurance at the center. Your medical necessity and other information will be prepared and submitted, and you will be notified of your insurance company's decision.
