HISTORY
For years, the logo above introduced our website and our TV commercials as we partnered with bariatric surgeons and leading hospitals in the Midwest to pioneer bariatric surgery (roux-en-y gastric bypass and later lap band) and comprehensive programs of education and support.
We've been serving the morbidly obese since 1997 when we first began introducing bariatric surgery in such notable cities as Cleveland OH, Chicago IL, Indianapolis IN, Nashville TN, and Louisville, KY, along with others. In those areas, we were the FIRST comprehensive bariatric surgery centers. Chances are if you had bariatric surgery years ago in one of those cities, you used a Right Weigh Bariatric Surgery Program.
Over the years, Right Weigh Programs have led the way in clinical advancement, marketing, and insurance and patient relations and education. We were the first to introduce group seminars to facilitate and promote patient pre-op education; we were the first to employ dietitians specifically for bariatric programs; we developed managed care protocols for insurance companies, and we helped thousands of people get medical necessity predetermination approval for bariatric surgery. Our support groups support groups and post-operative education sessions developed into regional and outlying groups, and some even made a business out of conducting support groups in the model we developed. We were the first to ensure patients had access to dietitians, realizing that "eating" would be the greatest challenge for many patients. We taught, and continut to teach, that surgery is only a TOOLand not the CURE for morbid obesity, and we continue to teach that the key to success after surgery is adopting a new lifestyle that promotes "thinness and health." Many of the components of today's Bariatric Center of Excellence criteria were first developed and introduced in Right Weigh centers.
SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS
We believe in bariatric surgery--both gastric bypass and lap band. Keys to bariatric surgery success include quick, safe weight loss as a motivator; continuing education, monitoring, support, and encouragement; awareness of emotional triggers; knowledge of the process of change; the importance of activity; and the use of nutritionally safe foods to promote health improvement while losing weight. Without these factors, we learned that bariatric patients will not be lastingly successful.
We have also come to believe that many motivated patients can achieve similar results to bariatric surgery without surgery when the same components noted above are part of a comprehensive, long-term non-surgical weight management program. Over the last 5-7 years, we have developed and continue to improve our Weight by Design program, with the help of our long-standing experience with obese patients, research, and the assistance of national experts in the field of weight loss, behavior, lifestyle adjustment and monitors, and maintenance.
Our efforts in non-surgical programs have also benefitted past bariatric surgery patients who began to regain weight, or failed to lose adequate weight after surgery. The GET BACK ON TRACK program was developed out of concern and care for our patients, but it has since been used by patients around the country, as we embraced modern technology to create a virtual clinic that brings the best support, education, and motivational guidance to anyone anywhere telephonically and via the internet. The program we developed and provide today provides education, guidance, and convenience, along with sound nutritional, fitness, and behavioral/emotional support and other necessary resources.
THE FUTURE AND HOW WE CAN HELP
We're proud of our history of providing sound health care and guidance to the morbidly obese over the years. We are also proud to say that every bariatric program which we started in concert with local hospitals has become a Bariatric Center of Excellence, is still in operation, and is still profitable for their host hospitals. We are founded on principles of sound business and personal ethics, and we have always striven to do what is best for the patient, regardless of the effect on our business. When you ask us for advice, we have always striven to put your needs and what's best for you first.

FOUNDER'S PERSONAL BACKGROUND
Rick graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting. After spending four years with the national accounting company of Ernst & Ernst (now Ernst & Young) as a senior auditor, during which time he earned his CPA designation and considerable time in the healthcare field, he moved to St Vincent Hospital and Health Care Center, in Indianapolis, IN. He was charged with starting and developing the Internal Audit department for the 850+ bed hospital, ensuring that both financial and operational processes came under the annual audit plan. After three years, the department was functioning smoothly and Rick moved onto another challenge---one that would enhance and change his professional life forever.
American Healthcorp (now the nation's leading disease management company Healthways) hired him as Director of Operational Accounting and Finance for their behavioral hospital chain, which operated 9 hospitals in 5 states). For the chain, Rick developed the accounting system, management reporting, business office procedures (leading to dramatically increased collections from insurance and patient), while participating in the strategic planning, budgeting, marketing, and operational oversight of the centers. He was later promoted to Vice President of Finance and Administration, and became President of the subsidiary once the new owners experienced financial problems and their creditors exercised an involuntary Chapter 11.
Appointed as President by the Lenders, Rick was charged with "turning the company around" so a sale could be accomplished. Using the expertise he had developed while working with the company previously, he enacted marketing and strategic plans, developed managed care relationships with key insurance companies, developed key referral sources, "shored up" operations, and "cleaned up" the business offices. The result was profitability within 9 months, without any cash infusions from the Lenders. The company was successfully sold two years later for millions more than the Lenders and creditors expected.
As a result of his efforts with ATC, Rick was hired by Winona Hospital in Indianapolis, IN (owned by OrNda Healthcorp and headed by Charles Martin) to accomplish a turnaround there. After introducing three new programs into the ailing hospital--wound care, diabetes, and bariatric surgery--the hospital strutted a $5 million positive turnaround in twelve months.
At Winona, Rick learned about bariatric surgery and saw firsthand as the first bariatric center in Indiana was developed from the "ground up" the dramatic effect of the surgery on the lives of patients. A love for the program developed and led him to leave the hospital in 1997 to develop programs around the Midwest so the morbidly obese would have access to this life-changing procedure.
