The
above BMI classification and bariatric surgery eligibility is based on National Institute of Health "Clinical Guidelines on the Identification,
Evaluation, and Treatment of
Overweight and Obesity in Adults" published in 1998.
Ideal body weight is associated with the lowest death rate in insured populations and is taken from the 1983 Metropolitan Life Insurance Company tables.
* Generally accepted clinical guidelines for bariatric surgery (gastric bypass and adjustable gastric band) include provisions for surgery for persons with BMI's between 35 and 40 if a serious medical condition such as hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, or sleep apnea has already developed, is being medically treated, and is considered to likely be a result of unresolved obesity.
